Former World Cross Country champion Agnes Tirop found dead, husband missing

Tirop won bronze in 2017 and 2019 World Championships

Women-only 10km record holder and former World Cross Country champion Agnes Jebet Tirop has been found dead in her Iten home. The 10.000m athlete who also represented Kenya in the Tokyo Olympic Games was found by neighbors who went to check on her after noisy altercations in her home on Tuesday night.

The athlete was due to celebrate her 25th birthday in ten days.

Tirop broke the 10km record last month at the Road to Records in Germany clocking 30:01 on her way to victory. She was also in action last week in Spain where she finished an impressive 2nd at the Valencia Half Marathon in 30:20.

In 2015 she became the second youngest gold medalist at the World Cross Country when she romped to victory in the senior women category in Najing, China two years after winning the junior women title in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Tirop also won the Africa Cross Country title in Kampala, Uganda in 2019.

"Athletics Kenya are this afternoon distraught to learn about the untimely death of World 10,000m bronze medalist Agnes Tirop. Tirop was found dead at their home in Iten after she was allegedly stabbed by her husband.

We are still working to unearth more details surrounding her demise. Kenya has lost a jewel who was one of the fastest-rising athletics giants on the international stage, thanks to her eye-catching performances on the track." Athletics Kenya said in a statement

Athletics Kenya Executive Committee Member representing athletes Milcah Chemos Cheywa who is a former steeplechase world champion confirmed Tirop's demise. The inconsolable Chemos said "We cannot say anything for now because no one is yet to come to terms with this death. She was still very young with a great promise in her long distance career,"

Neighbors say Tirop who is married to a police officer has been having issues with the husband and there was an altercation last night at their home. Neighbors say the athlete has stab wound in her abdomen when but was already dead when they got to the scene.

The husband is nowhere to be found and his phone is reportedly off. Athletics fraternity in Eldoret rushed to the home as the news trickled in.

Barnabas Korir, Athletics Kenya Director of Competitions conveyed his condolences to Tirop's family saying the Athletics fraternity has lost a resilient athlete whose progression from junior ranks to the senior has been well documented owing to the many feats she accomplished.
