Women-only 10km record holder and former World Cross Country champion Agnes Jebet Tirop has been found dead in her Iten home. The 10.000m athlete who also represented Kenya in the Tokyo Olympic Games was found by neighbors who went to check on her after noisy altercations in her home on Tuesday night.
The athlete was due to celebrate her 25th birthday in ten days.
Tirop broke the 10km record last month at the Road to Records in Germany clocking 30:01 on her way to victory. She was also in action last week in Spain where she finished an impressive 2nd at the Valencia Half Marathon in 30:20.
In 2015 she became the second youngest gold medalist at the World Cross Country when she romped to victory in the senior women category in Najing, China two years after winning the junior women title in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Tirop also won the Africa Cross Country title in Kampala, Uganda in 2019.
So sad she’s no more, after breaking the 10km world record last month. I first encountered her when she won the 6km junior women’s race at the 2014 Africa Cross-country Championships in Kololo. RIP Agnes Tirop. https://t.co/KlRVgesrFO— Darren Allan Kyeyune (@AllanDarren) October 13, 2021
